Comments about American Standard Colony 5' x 30" Integral Apron Bathtub:

This is a great looking tub with style. The instructions advise you to mount the tub on mortar bedding for stability but me being me instead of using mortar I made a wooden platform for the tub to sit on and works well and less mess.

We are planning on removing our tub and shower surround and replace it with just a bathtub. We are going to tile the entire alcove. What is the benefit to buying a bathtub with the tile flange vs. just a plain bathtub? We are total newbies to this so any advice is appreciated.

              A:

Almost all tubs have a tiling flange, if you are installing in an alcove, this is the type you want. The other type of tubs are "drop-in" tubs that usually get installed on an island or pier so would not have a tiling flange. You could still install this type of tub in an alcove, the installation will be slightly different.

What is the actual bathing depth and is there any type of slip-resistant material added to the bottom of it? I am looking at the bathing only (non whirlpool tub).

              A:

The water depth to the overflow on this model is 11.5”. There is a textured bottom in all acrylic tubs but they are not a slip resistant surface. Thank you.

Can you use the deep soak drain with this tub? If not, are there any 5' x 30" tubs that can use the deep soak drain?

              A:

You can use it on this model only if it is a non-whirlpool tub. Sorry but we do not have a 5’ X 30” whirlpool tub that the deep soak drain can be used on. . Thank you.

How much mortar mix is needed? And do you put it under and around the drain pipe area too? I have an 11" diameter cutout in my slab and the drain is at about 10 o'clock and 2 inches in from the rim of the cutout.
            Thank you

              A:

It will take around 2ea 80 pound bags of the ready mix mortar with the sand already mixed in it. Support as much as you can around the drain but leaving the cutout open is fine. Thank you

          • Q:

After we had our Colony installed, we noticed yesterday (about 3 months after installation) that in the tub floor bottom there is a 5/32" round deep, what looks like a hole that does not look like it goes all the way through the bottom of the tub but could cause structural weakness right where people stand to take a shower. It almost looks like a bubble during manufactoring popped. What can I do to fill in this hole and will it affect the structural strength of the tub?

              Hello,

Yes, this is an above-floor-rough tub with 3.5" of clearance underneath for the drain. The interior dimensions at the rim are 55-1/2" x 25-1/2". At the bottom of the bathing well, they are 46" x 20".

          • Q:

The description said this tub is a rough above floor installation. Does that mean it will sit on top of bathroom tiles?

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

              Hi Jake,

The term "above floor rough" or "above floor drain" means there is about 3.5" of clearance under the bathing well so that the drain plumbing can run above the bathroom floor. Generally in the US the drain is run inside the floor, between the floor joists, so there is no need for an above-floor-rough tub. However, there are situations, especially when remodeling, where an above-floor-rough tub will allow for an easier installation.
