      No. It may get up to 3" thick in areas and drywall compound will never set or be strong enough. Thank you.

  • Q:

    What is the space tolerance between each of the 3 pieces that make up the surround? Should the 3 pieces fit together so that they are virtually seamless and only require some caulking to seal to prevent for leakage?

  • Q:

    I recently removed my old cast iron tub and have 1 1/4" gap between the subfloor and where the old tub was, which are planks which run on top of the floor joists.

    Should I install a new subfloor where the old tub was? I'm assuming yes because you recommend using mortar to set this tub. If so, how thick of a subfloor should I get and what should the material be? (i.e, backer board or wood?) Thanks.

      A:

      Hello,

      Yes, the Rope Twist tub has a conventional tile flange and can be installed with a tile wall instead of the Rope Twist surround. Remember to trim the backer board so that it ends just above the top of the tile flange, and then tile so that the bottom tile extends over the tile flange, with the bottom edge being 1/8" above the tub deck surface. The gap can be grouted or caulked as desired.

      Hi Chris,

      Bedding a tub in mortar or wet cement is very common and is actually the best way to install a tub, providing the most solid installation.

      Some tubs come with pre-levelled feet so that they can either be bedded in mortar, or they can sit on a level subfloor.

      The Rope Twist does not come with pre-levelled feet, so it must be bedded in mortar. If you buy a small bag of mortar and mix it in a 5 gallon pail, available at any home center, you will find the installation to be relatively easy and straightforward.

    What is the inside depth, width and length of this tub?

      The bathing well for the Rope Twist bathtub is 15" deep. The length and width at the top are 53" x 25.5", and at the bottom they are 44" x 22".

  • Q:

    Can this tub be installed with only the left side and the back against the wall? (That is an L shape wall and the drain on the left end.) The front and right sides of the tub exposed and finished for this purpose?

      Hi Kathy,

      This tub is only available with a finished apron on one side, so it is generally installed in a 3-sided alcove. However, there are many people who install this with walls only on 2-sides by building a short "pony" wall on the third side. This short wall is generally just a few inches higher than the tub, and it provides a finished surface. It is also commonly used as a shelf for shampoos, soaps, etc.
