Q:
My contractor recently installed three Clean Cadet 3 elongated toilets in my house. They do not flush as well as shown in the Cadet 3 video. I notice the water does not have the "swirl" appearance down the drain with each flushing. My contractor told me it's due to the amount of water in the toilet and suggested replacing with Champion 4. How do I trouble shoot?

  A:
  If the gravity flush was fine and just recently began flowing slowly, then something is clogging either the venting or the exit path for the water. The newer 1.6 gallons per flush toilets require more ventilation to operate, whereas, their 3.5 GPF counterpart used the volume of water to flush the waste out.
  
  In order to improve the flush, so that the waste will flow out correctly, here are a few suggestions to try:
  
  1. Be sure the refill hose from the water control device is inside the long refill tube on the flush valve.
  2. Check the rim holes, by using a small nail or needle inside each hole to remove build-up or debris.
  3. Snake the lines leading to that toilet.
  4. Check that the venting on the roof for that toilet is open and free of debris.
  5. If you have venting behind or below the toilet remove any debris.
  
  If all of this does not work, there could be a plumbing problem deeper in the lines that is not around the toilet area. You may need to contact a plumber to resolve this situation. If this is a new toilet, then you may call Technical Customer Service at 1-800-442-1902, and then press option 1 for Consumer, then option 1 for Technical Support. Be prepared to have your model number, color of your model, month/year of purchase, name, street address and phone number. Q:
This toilet shows a 12 inch rough in, but also has a 1 1/8 inch space between the toilet and the wall.
I am replacing a toilet where the rough in is 11 inches and the tank is against the wall.
Can I put this toilet in and have the tank about 1/8 inch from the wall so that I can use my existing 11" rough in?

  The dimensions listed are nominal and can vary within industry standard tolerances, which is up to 1/2". With an 11" rough-in I would buy the bowl and tank separately, dry fit the 12" tank to see if it will fit or not, if it doesn't then it would be a simple matter to return the 12" tank for a 10" tank. I would suggest the Cadet 3 series.

  If you have a concealed trapway bowl, then not just any seat can be used. It must be a "top" mount seat as there is no access for the nuts and bolts used on normal toilet seats.

I just installed this toilet and all went well except the two caps on each side of the toliet that cover the bolt access are loose. They snapped in but the plastic rings are loose. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Thanks.
