Comments about American Standard Cadet 3 FloWise Elongated Toilet:

We have purchased two of these toilets over a year ago, both are working great. I was very excited about easy clean finish until our company bathroom started showing a slight water line. I am currently working with customer service on this problem. The most used toilet is in perfect condition, I would recommend, and I have recommended, this toilet to anyone who is in need to purchase a toilet. Uses very little water to flush, looks tidy and neat.

Everyone I know who has a toilet tank like this, has trouble getting the tank tight/stable enough. I got my answer on the Question/Answers section here. The instructions should be clearer on this installation and there should be something under Troubleshooting.

Asked on 2/15/2012 by Diane from Colchester, CT.

            1 answer

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Thank you for your questions concerning your toilet. The tank is meant to fit securely onto the bowl. The tank to bowl gasket, which is very thick, gives the impression that the tank cannot fit further down onto the bowl. If the tank was placed onto the back of the bowl, without the gasket between them, and they can be placed flush together, then that is the optimum placement for the connection. When the gasket is between them, you will have a slight difference in placement, but the tank should sit in the same position.

The best way to install the tank is to place the tank directly over the bolt holes to see how the tank will fit onto the bowl. This is not a necessary step but may help inexperienced installers. Be careful not to slam the tank down or the china may crack. After seeing how to place the tank, pull the tank off, put the gasket on the bottom of the tank, and then reapply the tank as you did before. Have a helper gently shift the tank down and back so that it stays in position. Keep tightening the bolts by hand, a little on each side, until you cannot tighten any more. Then use a wrench or deep socket wrench to tighten each side 1/4 turn until the tank meets the bowl. The tank should never rock or be loose. If it is, it is not tightened down properly, and you may have to remove the tank and try starting the process over. If you are concerned that you may break the tank, wait a week for the gasket to flatten out and retighten another 1/4 turn each side until snug. Do not over-tighten the bolts or the tank will crack under the pressure.

          • Q:

The little yellow float on the chain above the flapper kept catching under the flapper, so I removed it. Now the little chain that was left catches once in a while. Why is the little yellow float there? How can I make it, or the chain, not catch under the flapper when the toilet is flushed? (An earlier model we had, didn't have the yellow float and it worked great).

              A:

If there is any wobble in your tank you will need to loosen it back up and alternate small turns back and forth, left to right and this will allow it to come down straight and sit flush with the bowl. If not, you may have a leaking tank to bowl gasket. Please call our customer care line at 1-800-442-1902 for technical fixtures and one of our reps will order that for you.

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Thank you for your questions about your toilet. The test for the acceptable water level in the bowl is to fill the bowl slowly from a 3-gallon bucket. Once the bowl seems to reach the same water level, regardless of how much water is put into it, then it is at the normal level for that bowl. In order to increase the amount of water in the bowl you want to :

              1. Make sure that the supply line is fully open.
              2. Make sure that the refill hose is in the refill tube.
              3. Raise the Fluidmaster float cup by screwing it up about a 1/2" at a time.
              4. Flush the toilet and see if the water level rises in the bowl. You may want to take a grease pencil and mark where the original water line was before adjustments were made.
              5. If you need to, raise the level of the Fluidmaster again. You can safely raise it to 1/2" from the top of the refill tube.
              6. If you still do not have enough water in the bowl, you can pull off the refill hose from the Fluidmaster Water Control, remove the flow restrictor, and replace the refill hose. This will cause water to fill faster into the bowl, before the tank fills up.

We just installed a Cadet 3 Flowise toilet with the Everclean surface. I am concerned about what cleaners can be used without damaging the surface. For instance, the cleanier I typically use (Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Bleach) says corrosive on it. What cleaner does your company recomend?

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Bleach in the bowl as well as cleaners that will assist in removing mineral deposits are not harmfull to the everclean surface, the everclean surface is applied during the firing process, so it will never wear off. As long as you are not using abrasive cleaners that could create scratches, normal cleaning supplies can be used.

I live in the country where there is hard water and get rust stains and mineral deposit stains on my Cadet 3 everclean toilet bowl I tried to remove them with soapy water and this doesnt work so is it safe to use mineral deposit removers or toilet bowl cleaners on the Everclean finish in the bowl.

            1 answer

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Thank you for your questions about removing hard water stains. You may use CLR for Calcium, Lime, and Rust remover and a nylon scrubber. The nylon hand scrubbers are in the display with the kitchen scrubbers, but do not use a stiff one made for pots and pans. The scrubber needs to feel soft, with no abrasiveness, such as for Teflon pans. After applying the CLR for approximately 1-2 minutes, gently rub the hard water area with the scrubber to remove the stains and wipe with a soft sponge or cloth. Be sure to thoroughly wash the toilet bowl, preferably with clear water (cold to lukewarm only) with about 3 gallons of water to remove the residue.

While you are cleaning the hard water stains in your bowl, you may want to take the time to remove the build-up from your rim holes. Take a needle or a small (aluminum) nail and carefully insert it into each rim hole to remove the hard water that will also collect there.

          • Q:

I bought a Cadet 3 elongated bowl toilet in July and it has been giving me problems since day 1. The problem is the "running toilet". I tried the troubleshooting tip to flush out the fill valve 3 or 4 times and also adjusting the fill level several times. It is obvious that the water is leaking into the tank somewhere. We only have 1 bathroom so turning the toilet off for 24 hours to test it is not an option. I am getting no support from the big box store with the orange sign that bought it from and I am beginning to get very angry. This is a pretty expensive toilet and my water bills are getting higher and higher.

It sounds like it is probably leaking at the flapper. Please contact customer service to order parts under warranty. You can reach customer service at 1-800-442-1902. They will want you to have the model number. If you do not know the model number you can locate it on the inside of the tank. The model number is a 4 digit number that starts with a 2 or a 4.
