Comments about American Standard Champion 4 Right Height Elongated Toilet:

This toilet lives up to the advertising! I've never had a problem with clogging and it will probably be a very rare instance if it ever even happens. If you have young children, then you will definitely appreciate having this maintenance free toilet.

I also really like the more traditional styling of the toilet. The Right Height is so much easier to use than the shorter versions. The one thing that was disappointing was that the toilet came with a cheap plastic handle. When I tried to find a nicer metal one, I discovered that you can not buy just any handle. It has to be one made specifically for this model. Fortunately, there is a metal one that looks decent. Not the style I would have chosen, but it's not terrible looking. Besides that small quibble, which can be easily remedied, this toilet is a product that I recommend over and over again to all my friends who are looking for a toilet.

I love this powerful flush! I had an apartment, and the toilet would clog constantly. We have had this toilet for almost six months, and I have yet to use the plunger. Despite the power, it is still a quiet flush.

Whats the difference between American Standard models 2586.000 and 2586.000st and 3225.016.020?

              A:

The 2586.000ST is a no tool version with a slow close seat. The 3225.016.020 is just the bowl.

          • Q:

9/1/2010 I purchased a American Standard Champion 4 Right Height 1 piece toilet model # 2034.014 s/n 4266. The toilet was professionally installed by a Lowe's contractor. The seat did not stay up and in a attempt to adjust it to stay up I broke the hinge. I purchased another Champion 4 American Standard seat from Lowe's and it does not stay up either. The toilet tank is sloped forward which will not allow the seat to stay up. This does not appear to be a problem with the installation but with the manufacture of the toilet. The toilet was manufactured with the tank sloping forward.

              A:

Thank you for your questions concerning your toilet. The tank is meant to fit securely onto the bowl. The tank to bowl gasket, which is very thick, gives the impression that the tank cannot fit further down onto the bowl. If the tank was placed onto the back of the bowl, without the gasket between them, and they can be placed flush together, then that is the optimum placement for the connection. When the gasket is between them, you will have a slight difference in placement, but the tank should sit in the same position.

The best way to install the tank is to place the tank directly over the bolt holes to see how the tank will fit onto the bowl. This is not a necessary step but may help inexperienced installers. Be careful not to slam the tank down or the china may crack. After seeing how to place the tank, pull the tank off, put the gasket on the bottom of the tank, and then reapply the tank as you did before. Have a helper gently shift the tank down and back so that it stays in position. Keep tightening the bolts by hand, a little on each side, until you cannot tighten any more. Then use a wrench or deep socket wrench to tighten each side 1/4 turn until the tank meets the bowl. The tank should never rock or be loose. If it is, it is not tightened down properly, and you may have to remove the tank and try starting the process over. If you are concerned that you may break the tank, wait a week for the gasket to flatten out and retighten another 1/4 turn each side until snug. Do not over-tighten the bolts or the tank will crack under the pressure.

Just bought one and husband installed it. Seems to be leaking/seeping from the blueish gasket between the water tank and the bowl part. We checked the bolts that hold the two together and it's not coming from them. We've tightened as much as we can and still slow leak.....what do you recommend?? Love the flushing power!!

          • Q:

I've had one 2586 toilet for about a year and have just bought another. After the new bowl fills, it slowly drains down to where there is only about 1 inch deep of water at the bottom. The old one only drains to where it is almost 5 inches deep. This process takes about two minutes after the fill valve turns off. What is the correct operation and what can I do to correct it? I tested another new one by setting the new bowl on the garage floor without attaching anything else, and then pouring water into the bowl until full to about 5 inches deep. The water still drained from the bowl slowly to the 1 inch depth.

You will need to unthread the wing nut on the green dome, the green dome will then release. You will need to remove the existing blue seal and put the new blue seal on be sure to align the grooves on the seal with the groves on the green dome and tighen the wing nut back to the dome.
