American Standard SaTo Hygienic Toilet Pan Recognized with 2014 GREEN GOOD DESIGN Award

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 28, 2015) ― The SaTo hygienic toilet pan, invented by American Standard Brands, has been named a 2014 GREEN GOOD DESIGN award recipient in the Humanitarian category. This award is presented by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

Each year, the GREEN GOOD DESIGN award recognizes innovative industrial designs that contribute to promoting healthy living. It aims to create public awareness of the products and firms that contribute to worldwide design innovation with a sustainable edge.

The SaTo (named for “Safe Toilet”) is a cost effective, sanitary toilet pan initially designed for use in Bangladesh, where most people use non-hygienic open pit latrines to defecate. The SaTo pan employs ingeniously simple mechanical and water seals to close off pit latrines from the open air, thereby reducing the transmission of disease through direct and indirect contact with waste. Distribution of the SaTo pan has been expanded to regions in Southeast Asia, Africa and Haiti to aid in providing adequate sanitation facilities and an improved quality of life. By the end of 2017, American Standard plans to donate 1.2 million SaTo hygienic toilet pans for installation in schools and homes in developing countries globally, bringing an estimated 5.5 million people safer sanitation facilities.

This is the third time that American Standard has been named a GREEN GOOD DESIGN award recipient. The Company received accolades in 2013 for its ICS Sink with Selectronic IC Faucet, being recognized for its innovative technology that promoted the importance of a hygienic environment. In 2012, American Standard received a GREEN GOOD DESIGN award for its sleek and water-efficient Decorum FloWise Urinal.

Since 1950, more than 40,000 GREEN GOOD DESIGN award have been presented to the world’s top manufacturers, design firms and Fortune 500 companies. An international panel composed of leaders in the design industry select more than 100 products, programs, people, government, environmental planning, and architecture as the best representations of green design. It is one of the world’s most prestigious awards for sustainable product designs.
